My friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the 14th anniversary of Storer College. This institution was founded by John Brown, a white abolitionist who dedicated his life to fighting for the freedom of enslaved people. Brown was a complex and controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he was a man of great courage and conviction.

In this address, I will explore Brown's life and legacy. I will argue that Brown was a hero in the fight for racial justice, and that his example should continue to inspire us today.

John Brown's Early Life

John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut, in 1800. He was the son of a farmer and a devout Christian. Brown's father was a strong supporter of the abolitionist movement, and he instilled in his son a deep hatred of slavery.

As a young man, Brown worked as a tanner and a wool merchant. He also served as a captain in the Kansas militia during the Bleeding Kansas crisis. In 1855, Brown led a group of abolitionists in the raid on Pottawatomie Creek, in which five pro-slavery settlers were killed.

The Raid on Harpers Ferry

In 1859, Brown led a group of 21 men in a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown's goal was to seize the arsenal and use it as a base for a slave rebellion. However, the raid failed, and Brown and his men were captured by federal troops.

Brown was tried for treason and murder, and he was sentenced to death. He was hanged on December 2, 1859.

Brown's Legacy

Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was a failure, but it had a profound impact on the course of American history. The raid helped to galvanize the abolitionist movement, and it played a role in the outbreak of the Civil War.

Brown was a complex and controversial figure. He was a violent man who was willing to use force to achieve his goals. However, he was also a man of great courage and conviction. He dedicated his life to fighting for the freedom of enslaved people, and he died a martyr to the cause of racial justice.

Brown's legacy is still debated today. Some people view him as a hero, while others see him as a terrorist. However, there is no doubt that Brown was a significant figure in the history of the United States. His raid on Harpers Ferry was a turning point in the struggle for racial justice, and his example continues to inspire activists today.
