Why We Cannot Teach Or Learn Our Way Out Of Inequality
Education is often hailed as the key to success. We are told that if we work hard and get a good education, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. But what happens when the system is rigged against us? What happens when the opportunities we are given are not equal?

In her groundbreaking book, "Why We Cannot Teach Or Learn Our Way Out Of Inequality," Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard argues that we cannot simply teach or learn our way out of inequality. She contends that the root causes of inequality are systemic and that we need to address them at the structural level.
Nembhard draws on her own experiences as a teacher, researcher, and advocate to illustrate the ways in which the education system perpetuates inequality. She shows how tracking, standardized testing, and other policies and practices create barriers for students of color, low-income students, and students with disabilities.
Nembhard also challenges the myth of meritocracy. She argues that the idea that success is based solely on individual effort is a lie. She points to the fact that students from wealthy families are more likely to succeed in school, even when they have the same academic abilities as students from poor families.
Nembhard's book is a powerful indictment of the status quo. She shows how the education system is failing our most vulnerable students and contributing to the perpetuation of inequality. But she also offers hope. She argues that we can create a more just and equitable society by addressing the root causes of inequality and by investing in our children and communities.
