James Milton Black was an American composer, lyricist, and minister. He is best known for writing the music and lyrics to the song "When The Saints Go Marching In".

Black was born in Clinton, Mississippi, in 1856. He began playing the guitar and singing at a young age. In 1877, he moved to New Orleans, where he became involved in the city's vibrant music scene.

In 1896, Black wrote the song "When The Saints Go Marching In" for a revival meeting. The song quickly became popular, and it has since been recorded by countless artists around the world.

Black died in New Orleans in 1938. He is buried in the city's Greenwood Cemetery.
