In his groundbreaking book, America's Path to Permanent War: The American Empire Project, historian and political scientist Andrew Bacevich argues that the United States has been on a path to permanent war since the end of the Cold War. Bacevich traces the roots of this path to the post-World War II era, when the United States emerged as the world's preeminent superpower. In the years that followed, the United States became increasingly involved in military interventions around the globe, from the Korean War to the Vietnam War to the Gulf War. These interventions were often justified in the name of fighting communism, but they also served to expand American power and influence.
After the Cold War ended, the United States continued to pursue a policy of military interventionism, even though the threat of Soviet communism had disappeared. This interventionism was driven by a number of factors, including the desire to maintain American global hegemony, the belief that the United States had a responsibility to promote democracy and human rights around the world, and the power of the military-industrial complex. The result of this interventionism has been a series of costly and counterproductive wars that have destabilized the Middle East, created a breeding ground for terrorism, and damaged the United States' reputation in the world.
Bacevich argues that the United States is on a path to permanent war because it has failed to learn the lessons of history. The United States has repeatedly intervened in other countries without understanding the local context or the long-term consequences of its actions. This has led to a series of disastrous unintended consequences, including the rise of anti-Americanism, the spread of terrorism, and the erosion of American democracy. Bacevich believes that the United States must change course if it wants to avoid the consequences of permanent war. He argues that the United States must adopt a more restrained foreign policy, one that is based on diplomacy and cooperation rather than military intervention.
America's Path to Permanent War is a timely and important book that challenges the conventional wisdom about American foreign policy. Bacevich's analysis is clear-eyed and unflinching, and he offers a powerful indictment of the American empire project. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the United States' role in the world today.
