Graves was born in London in 1895. He was the son of a wealthy lawyer, and he received a privileged education. Graves began writing poetry at a young age, and he published his first collection of poems, Over the Brazier, in 1916. The following year, he was commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers and sent to the Western Front.
