About Herman Melville

Herman Melville Portrait Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass: 176th Anniversary Edition (Illustrated)

Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. He is best known for his epic novel Moby-Dick, which is considered one of the great American novels.

Melville was born in New York City and spent his early years sailing on merchant ships. He later worked as a customs inspector and a teacher. In 1846, he published his first novel, Typee, which was based on his experiences in the South Seas.

Melville's other notable works include the novels Moby-Dick (1851),Pierre (1852),and Billy Budd, Sailor (1891). He also wrote several short stories, including "Bartleby the Scrivener" (1853) and "Benito Cereno" (1855).

Melville's work is known for its rich symbolism, complex characters, and exploration of themes such as good and evil, fate and free will, and the nature of human existence.
